— The Bhagavad Gita

The What & Why of Yoga

Yoga originated in ancient India approximately 500BCE. The word ‘yoga’ itself came from the Sanskrit word ‘Yui’ meaning ‘to unite’ or ‘to yolk’. The ancient practice helps to create a deeper connection with ourselves and our surroundings. With practice, yoga can give us a sense of peace, wellbeing and connection.

Utilising this ancient and complex practice, yoga strives to unite and balance the body, mind and spirit. It can empower us to achieve greater flexibility, physical strength and stillness of the mind.

Benefits of Yoga:

  • Improves strength, balance and flexibility

  • Relieves stress and anxiety

  • Builds and maintains strength

  • Calms the mind

  • Develops focus and improved brain function

  • Improved quality of sleep

  • Lower blood pressure

About me…

Hi I’m Amy, I’m a mum of 3 not-so-young children (25, 22 and 15!), and I know how hard it is to set aside or allow the time and space for you, despite the importance of it!

I started my yoga journey later than most but have been able to see first hand the benefits yoga has to offer. Being in my early 50’s, I am fully aware of the challenges we face as our bodies age, not least in terms of flexibility and range of movement.

My passion is to bring yoga and its benefits to everybody regardless of ability. Yoga is not about bending into pretzel-like shapes or mastering a headstand, it is so much more than that. Yoga is about being in your body and accepting yourself for who you are and making friends with our body. I want to show people that yoga is all inclusive and with modifications and adjustments all the poses and their benefits are accessible.

I have struggled with depression and anxiety all my adult life and after my first yoga class I was able to appreciate, first-hand, all that yoga has to offer. Working not only with the physical practice (Asana) but with the breath (Prananyama), relaxation and meditation, I am now more able to manage my anxiety and accept what perhaps I cannot change and let go of more.

It is very hard not to let the ego take over in our yoga practice but if we allow ourselves the space and awareness to truly be in that moment with our body and its strengths and weaknesses, we can immerse into creating a oneness between our body and mind and work with the breath to really connect with our bodies.

In addition to my studio teachings, I have taught Gentle chair yoga with the residents of Homewood Care Home in Teddington and parent groups at Home-Start, a wonderful organisation helping families get started in their community across the UK. As a result of this work, I am fully insured and DBS checked.

Although a latecomer to yoga, it wasn’t unwanted but when an opportunity landed at my workplace I discovered the difference between attending a class and connecting with your teacher for a truly holistic yoga experience. Since those halcyon days (sigh) and post-children, I have struggled to find that connection….until the day I found Amy. So much love, warmth, humour, knowledge, compassion and skill. The perfect yoga teacher doesn’t exist….except she does! Emma

Amy’s classes are so wonderful. A good pace, challenging but not too fast or too slow. She is kind, warm and non judgemental. I invariably turn up feeling stressed with my brain racing, when I leave I feel light and energised, calm and more relaxed. I can’t recommend her enough. Anna

Amy is kind and calm with a gentle soul. I always feel so much better not just physically but mentally after Amy’s class, ready to tackle the day ahead. Offering varying poses for mixed abilities with no pressure. I would highly recommend her class. Sam

I was so pleased to find Amy's yoga class and really look forward to it each week. She is a knowledgeable yet really down to earth and approachable teacher. Not only do I leave the class feeling fully refreshed and de-stressed but have a warm glow at the end due to Amy's friendliness and humour. It's really great to have a yoga teacher with a sense of humour as you never feel intimidated. She is very thoughtful and positive. I feel that I have improved without working too hard and yet she pushes us onto new challenges as the weeks progress. Mex
